The phenomenon where microorganisms—such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites—develop the ability to survive exposure to antimicrobial drugs, such as antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics, poses a critical threat to effective treatment and prevention of infections.
