Computer operating systems (OS) and emerging trends are discussed in this article. Operating systems serve as interfaces between computer hardware and users. The purpose of the study is to determine the direction of OS for modern computing systems based on the emerging trends of OS. In order to accomplish this, the paper examines the concepts of OS, its underlying architectures, and its evolution. Furthermore, the papers discuss security issues with OS architectures and provide best practices for securing OS. A recent study found that IoT OS, Cloud OS, AI-powered OS, Blockchain OS, Hybrid OS, and Container OS are the current trends in OS. In the paper, the major OSes are compared for their strengths and weaknesses. A double-layer security approach is proposed, in which the OS is hardened with security policies and security protocols are embedded in the OS's hardware. A discovery was made regarding the operating system. It was discovered that every technology comes with its own unique architecture and OS. Such a system is worrisome for engineers to develop. As part of the design architecture, the paper proposes the development of a universal operating system for all architectures, which leaves room for further expansion while mitigating the impact of power consumption.
